Hi All,
Healing is launched! We had a lovely event Monday night at City of Asylum, here on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Many people braved the cold and rainy evening to attend and enjoyed munchies and bubbly (Prosecco) afterwards—our version of a Covid-appropriate party. It was a meaningful evening and lots of fun. Thanks to those who came in person and to those who watched from home. Much appreciation also to my friend and health care improvement colleague Ken Segel, who was a generous and thoughtful conversation partner.
Book Clubs
I am available to virtually join book clubs discussing Healing and I want to do that as a way to continue the conversation about health care re-humanization. Sharing our thoughts on making health care more compassionate, more truly patient-centered, is so important. Covid is an opportunity for a health care reset, a time to match the often miraculous treatments we offer with truly empathic care. As I say in Healing, the balance is off—health care profits have become more important than seeing patients as people first. That can and must change.
As part of that reset, we must talk and think about making care equitable for all Americans, whether low-income, Black, Latino, LGBTQ, Indigenous Americans, the homeless, rural Americans, or members of any other group that in general do not receive the best care possible. No one should have their humanity denied by being denied quality care in this, the richest country in the world. No one.
If your book group, or your conversation group, or a group of friends, decides to read Healing, please reach out to me through my website (theresabrownrn.com). I will join you, and sign and send you bookplates made for just this purpose. I would love to connect with you. Really.
Reviews and Excerpts
Healing was reviewed in The New York Times—my first book to receive this level of attention. It will come out in print in the Sunday “Books Section,” but I don’t yet know when. There was also a review in The Chicago Review of Books. I’m waiting on a review from The Washington Post, too, which is exciting.
I’ll be honest and say I have my quibbles with the reviews above. They also have their quibbles with me and the book. But both have lots of positive comments and overall I feel proud of the recognition. Tell me what you think.
Book Tour
I head off to Milwaukee on Wednesday and to St. Louis on Thursday. I have events in both cities. My full travel schedule is on my website under “Events.” I am doing a lot of interviews, which tend to be rewarding and interesting. It takes a lot of work to launch a book into the world and all of you are part of that. Thank you for being involved.
When I was first diagnosed, my daughter Miranda bought me a stuffed toy milk duct to comfort me, which it did. The story of my breast cancer treatment and diagnosis is now the book Healing. The picture below captures, in the way only a picture can, that passage of time and hard creative work.
Hugs and love to all,
Theresa
What a wonderful mission you have! The word reset is interesting, is it not, in the current milieu? Can we reset toward local, internally-based sovereignty while creating supportive opportunities for CHOICE around healthcare that are honoring, empowering and help people access their soulful strength?
Theresa, I wolfed down your book in one sitting yesterday - thank you for your poignant and keen insights from the other side of the sheet!!!
